If you’re on vacation long enough in Miami, at some point you’ll get tired of drinking (or suffering the hangovers) and your body can’t take any more sun or sand. Or maybe you’re looking for maximum fun with minimum funds. What else is there to do besides the run-of-the-mill touristy stuff? Spending time in Miami can get quite costly so you really gotta make use of those cheaper options if you want to enjoy the place a bit longer. We already created a small weekend guide to Miami where we named a few great places to visit on a short stay. The following tips are our top-5 things to do when you are visiting on a budget.
1. Rent a Boat
While most people think partying on a private boat or enjoying a relaxing cruise around Miami is something reserved only for the well off, that’s not actually true. In today’s share economy there are plenty of options for folks on a budget. You just have to know where to look. Websites such as Boat.me have listings for boat rentals all around the area for as low as $50 an hour, and if you split that cost between everyone in your party, you can enjoy an afternoon on Biscayne Bay for just a few Dollars per person.

2. Rooftop Bars
Little known fact: There is no door charge for most hotel rooftops bars. Head to the elevator and punch the button for the top floor. Spend a few bucks on drinks, enjoy the view, and take some selfies. And if there’s a pool… well… at least there’s no sand to shake out of your towel. The best option for a night out with an amazing ambience, great views and no cover is the W Hotel rooftop bar.

3. Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables
Perhaps you’re looking to indulge in a little bit of culture and history. You could enjoy a Sunday afternoon at the Biltmore Hotel, where they offer free tours. The Biltmore was the ultimate baller’s hangout in the old days. It hosted and entertained royalty, aristocracy, and the legendary, a diverse crowd ranging from Bing Crosby to Al Capone. It’s the only functioning hotel in all of South Florida recognized as a National Historic Landmark.

4. Local Events and Festivals
It’s no secret that Miami is a multicultural metropolis chock-full of pride. Your task? There’s bound to be something special going on that’s not only free or inexpensive to attend, but also offers tons of local food, unique experiences, and quality souvenirs.
Free art walks or block parties in Wynwood, free films and concert screenings on the 7,000-square-foot outdoor projection wall at the New World Center and so much more local happenings to discover.

5. Museums
Any city worth its salt has a museum of some kind. But honestly, how many wax Neanderthals or classical paintings can you look at? If you want a memorable museum trip, try the Miami Auto Museum. For less than $30 per adult, you can peruse the largest privately owned collection of eclectic rides in the world from classics, military vehicles, and models popularized in television and film. Another museum you don’t want to miss is the famous Perez Art Museum – contemporary art, DJ and happy hour on the beautiful terrace every Thursday and free admission every first Thursday and second Saturday of the month!

These are just a few of the many budget-friendly options for those looking to enjoy a Miami vacation that goes beyond the usual tourist experience. You will always find free tours around the city, either by foot or by bike or simply enjoy nice walks through the famous districts of Miami.
